Purity - Thayir

If we can all agree upon the question!

What is India’s National food?

Before I list out the contenders,

I’d like to put out a disclaimer:

The content is exclusively my way of understanding food and its sensibilities,

it is not intended to draw a debate and it’s entirely my opinion.

  1. Kitchidi - The oldest known carbonized remains of lentil from Greece's Franchthi Cave are dated to 11,000 BC. So how could kitchidi which is all but lentils come into the domain ?

  2. Biriyani : Persian ancestors

  3. Idli : Kedli from present day Indonesia

  4. Somasa : the chaos of samsa

  5. Anything that has TOMATO : don’t tell me your makhni sauce

Cuisines of India talks about its diversity and hence drawing out one leader is a harder task but what if, one recipe which has the ability to diversify itself and blend in, and I believe it is rooted to its very culture and its beliefs.

.

The “Curd” or yoghurt is an integral part of our region, when I say region ‘ I mean India.

A country where portray ourself as Mother india, and who worships cows as mothers for their milk, and which has a climate that naturally ferments its milk into yoghurt, where it’s ghee is the byproduct that’s used on sacred rituals, its got to have quite an alibi to neglect its importance.

Curd rice, also called yogurt rice, is a dish originating from India. The word "curd" in Indian Englishrefers to unsweetened probiotic yogurt. It is most popular in the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala , Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh; and also in Maharashtra. In the state of Maharashtra it is known as dahi bhat. In the state of Tamil Nadu it is called thayir saadam, in Kerala it is called tayire chōre and in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh it is called perugannam/daddojanam. In Karnataka, it is called mosaranna. The dish is a staple of traditional cuisine, with the untempered version present at the end of almost every South Indian meal. The tempered version is often served during formal occasions and also offered as prasadam (blessed food) to devotees in temples.(Source : wiki -only this paragraph)

There is a bunch of personal nostalgia associated to “thayir sadham” too.
